Workers Compensation Attorney Woodland Hills
The neighborhood of Woodland Hills in the city of Los Angeles is nestled next to the Santa Monica Mountains in the San Fernando Valley. The area is believed to have been inhabited for nearly 8,000 by Native Americans, and it was first discovered by Europeans during the Portola Expedition in 1769.
A number of notable people do or have lived in the area, including Tito and Jermaine Jackson, Lisa Kudrow, and Wilmer Valderrama. In 2008 it was estimated that there were approximately 63,000 residents in the area with the median age being 40 and with many of these individuals living together as families.
When a working member of a family is injured while working, the whole family can suffer dramatically.
Workplace Injuries Can Cause Financial Hardship for Families
When someone is injured at work, employers face a large portion of the injury costs. But according to a joint study conducted by the Northern Kentucky University and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), workplace injuries take a significant toll on families.
Workplace injuries can result in costly medical bills. If the injury turns out to be a chronic condition and is not properly compensated for, this can destroy a family’s savings and lead a middle-class family into significant debt or even poverty.
Workplace Injuries Can Result in Additional Physical and Emotional Hardship
The study also found that family members of injured workers had 34% more of the following injuries within the three months following a relative’s workplace illness or injury:
- Joint dislocations
- Sprains
- Fractures
- Other muscoloskeletal disorders
This may be due to a child or spouse trying to help a larger, injured relative with tasks or needing to perform extra chores to make up for what the injured relative can no longer do.
Injuries also can create emotional strain between the injured worker and their families. Time loss payments are only two-thirds of what a worker would be making which can increase stress, and time away from work can create tension between co-workers and supervisors. Being off work can also reduce a worker’s self-esteem and it can lead to mental health issues.
